Access to medicines in Uganda: A Human Rights P...

Over the years, health service delivery in Uganda has become a challenge due to a persistent lack of medical supplies in Public hospitals. This is largely attributed to Poor planning and forecasting characterized by failure to present adequate and timely procurement plans by both health facilities and District Health Officials, Limited budgetary allocations, Inadequate data management and monitoring systems to track amounts of drugs ordered, dispersed, prescribed and balances, Non-supply of ordered items by National Medical Stores, Abuse of the referral system by patients, clinicians prescribing more drugs than needed to mention but a few. The non availability of essential medicines such as anti-malarial drugs at public health facilities when patients need them at a particular time directly translates into loss of lives and is also an affront to health and human rights of Ugandans. The readers of this book will not only get informed about the current situation of drugs in Uganda, but will also be offered the solutions to a better approach towards the efficient management of medicine necessary for human life.

The government of Uganda and other NGOs have put in place various interventions in the child welfare and protection like: The 1996 Uganda Children Statute, the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda Article 34(1), Uganda Penal Code Act, Cap 106, Section 123, ANPPCAN Uganda Chapter Report on child abuse and neglect May, 2007, the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) and many others. However, much as the above interventions are in operation, the information on child abuse victims reported to police countrywide is still very high(Police Annual Crime Report, 2012). The purpose of this book is to establish the effects of child abuse on academic performance of children in primary schools. The specific objectives are to:Examine the factors responsible for the increased causes of child abuse , analyze how child abuse affects the academic performance of children in primary schools and to analyze appropriate measures that can be taken to combat child abuse and improve academic performance of children in primary schools.
