Compared to other forms of orphanhood, AIDS orphanhood is very unique. It is characterised by unique challenges, coping mechanisms and responses. Unfortunately, in addressing the plight of AIDS orphaned children, the dependency syndrome of extrapolating findings from studies done in HICs to the region irrespective of contextual relevance has limited success (White and Robinson, 2000). Aware of this, this book addresses this concern by providing contextually relevant information on AIDS orphanhood challenges, coping, institutional responses in place and the measures that should be put in place to effectively address the plight of CHHA. Having no better country to ground context relevance of CHHA and AIDS orphanhood issues in SSA, their global epicentre, a study whose findings form the core of this book was conducted in Uganda, a former epicentre of HIV/AIDS and a world model in the battle against HIV/AIDS. The book is a resource for Scholars, policy makers, practitioners, the CSOs and Inter-Governmental organisations and programmes in the areas of HIV/AIDS, orphanhood and CHHA.

The presence of weak local government structures in terms of infrastructure, human and financial resources have rendered them unresponsive to people s suffering in much of Africa and Uganda in particular. This phenomenon has culminated into poor socioeconomic welfare of citizens as manifested in poor health and education provision, unemployment and poverty especially in rural areas of eastern Uganda which has the second highest poverty rate of all the regions of Uganda and to be specific Bugiri district in which this study was done. The interesting question here is, how do citizens cope with such poor socioeconomic welfare? The answer to this question seems to lie in Community initiatives in form of NGOs. However, recent studies by The World Bank have pointed out weakness in NGOs development work in regard to impact and sustainability. This was the basis upon which this study was conducted to prove or disapprove the above studies. Finally, this book makes some recommendations based on the findings and the critical one being how NGOs can raise finances locally if they are to save themselves from the challenges associated with financial dependency.

Humanitarian aid, while useful in the short run, sometimes contributes to poverty and poor economic conditions in the long run. This occurs when the recipients lose their initiative to fend for themselves and become reliant on external aid. This study evaluated the degree to which dependency on long term aid has contributed to chronic poverty in Moroto District of Uganda. The research addressed the relationship between household production and investment pattern with number of year as aid beneficiary, while exploring the beneficiaries' perceptions on the roles of relief aid in their livelihood. Quantitative data analyzed using multivariate regression analysis indicated a statistically significant negative relationship between household production and investment with number of years as aid beneficiary. The result of qualitative data analysis indicated that many recipients believe that if aid were to cease, they would either migrate to where aid was available, or die of starvation. This implies that organizations offering humanitarian aid to package relief aid with other programs that support the recipients' resilience building capacity in order to save lives and reduce poverty.
