Using the Farmer Field School approach, farmers were trained in key agronomic practices like spacing, method of planting, fertilizer and pesticide use by FAO since 2009 to 2011. Despite all these interventions, there is low adoption of NERICA in Ogur and Agweng Sub Counties in Lira District, Uganda. Personal interactions with FAO official, Production Coordinator and District Agricultural Officer Lira, revealed that there was no empirical work so far carried out to ascertain the possible relationship between farmers' characteristics and adoption of NERICA in Ogur and Agweng Sub Counties. The author therefore sought to carry out a study to ascertain the possible relationship between farmers' characteristics (socio-demographic and socio-economic factors) and adoption of NERICA in Ogur and Agweng Sub Counties in order to address the problems of food insecurity and low incomes by the farmers through implementation of the recommendations made. It is therefore, the author's wish that the target clientele governments (Ministries of Agriculture) and other development partners-NGOs, Researchers, private sector, farmers' organizations (farmers and anyone else) will find this work useful.

The Economics of Adaption to Climate Change

Sweet potato technologies, like drought resistant varieties and virus cleaned planting material have shown resilience of agricultural systems to climate change related effects. However, adoption of these technologies is very low in Uganda. This study was designed to assess the adoption potential of these technologies by rural farm household under climate change conditions. Data were collected from Kabale and Soroti districts using household survey, focused group discussion and secondary sources. The Tradeoff Analysis, Minimum Data Model Approach was employed to estimate the adoption potential of alternative practices under climate change. Results from focused group discussion reveal that farmers have developed different adaptation strategies to climate change such as swamp reclamation, migration to other areas, mixed cropping among others. Results from the model show that adoption potential under climate change is high and varies depending on agro-ecological zones, wealth status and opportunity costs of adopting the technology. Further research is needed to to explore joint adoption of crop technologies that have shown resilience to climate related effects.

This book, "effectiveness of the interventions towards sustainable forest conservation ", assesses different efforts to sustainably conserve forests in Uganda with emphasis on Kitechura central forest reserve in Kyenjojo district of western Uganda. The efforts, such as tree planting, provision of alternative energy sources, bee keeping, were assessed and some of them were proven to be effective in sustainable conservation. It was found out that provision of incentives, such as apiary production, to forest dependent communities can encourage them to conserve forests more.

Resource Utilization in Rice Production

Rice growing is dominant in the eastern parts of Uganda. The contribution of farm resources to rice production as well as the returns to resources and their management remains unknown. The book examines land management practices with specific emphasis on crop rotation and bush fallowing and goes further to analyse problems created by dominance of land ownership by men.The book further reveals that family labour is a dominant resource with high returns. The book recommends that production should be directed towards commercialisation of rice though investment in capital by small-scale rice farmers is still limited. Production of rice is characterised by high costs implying that the revenue generated is paid to the variable and fixed inputs, leaving a negative residual to the farmer. Therefore, increasing rice production in the shotrun will generally be achieved by putting more male labour and fertilisers to use. Given that rice production is done under low-input farming systems, interventions such as row planting and use of ox-plough is required. Furthmore, improved provision of credit and education services should be ensured for sustainable rice production.
